Here are the top tips to research like a pro using the example of the correlation of heart disease and smoking in men over 50:

1. Use multiple phrases to define your search: A good advanced search would include multiple phrases instead of just heart disease. You can search for heart disease, cardovascular disease, heart health, or coronary artery disease. Additionally, you can search men, male, or males.

2. Use proper punctuation in your advanced search: Quotation marks are used to search words as one phrase. An asterisk is used to search for different endings of the words. AND, OR, and NOT operate as limiters in your search. You would want to put "heart disease" in quotes, so the search does not include results for "heart" and "disease. "

3. Ask for help: Your University Librarians are always willing to help with research. Student workers at the Library help staff our LiveChat as well. Visit this link to open the chat dialogue. We can help you with a range of resources, like database searching, locating books, finding research articles, and more. If you brought this question to us, we would use an advanced search that looks like this to locate resources for you.
